Jim received a B.F.A. from the University of Michigan - Flint, majoring in Theatre Performance. He then went on to study art and design at Mott Community College, where he received his A.A.S. in Graphic Design. After working as a professional designer and art director, Jim returned to Michigan State University, where he graduated with an M.F.A. in Studio Art with a concentration in Graphic Design. 


Jim is currently a Professor and the Art and Design Program Coordinator at Mott Community College in Flint, MI. Joining the faculty in 2007, Jim has taught a variety of courses in art and design, and in 2013, he received the Outstanding Faculty Award at the college.
